Hua Ho

Established In 1947

Hua Ho Department Store is a well-established retail chain in Brunei. It was established by Lau Gim Kok back in 1947. Over the years, the company has experienced significant growth and expansion throughout the country. In addition to its retail operations, Hua Ho has also ventured into agricultural farming to ensure a steady supply of produce and poultry for its supermarket branches across Brunei.

Hua Ho 1st Outlet JLN MUARA, MANGGIS

Hua Ho opened its first outlet in Jalan Muara, Manggis. This milestone marked the shift from a single store operation to a retail chain. The location was chosen for its accessibility close enough to the center of economic and social activity, yet in Manggis, where people from various neighborhoods could easily reach.

GADONG MINI-MART

By 1981, Hua Ho was ready to experiment with new formats. The Gadong Mini-Mart introduced the idea of convenience shopping: smaller footprint, shorter queues, essential items, quick in-and-out. Located in Gadong, an area burgeoning with residential growth, this outlet served office workers, families, and students who needed quick access to groceries without travelling far.

BERAKAS

In 1982, Hua Ho opened in Berakas. Once a more rural area, Berakas was beginning to develop rapidly as Brunei’s population expanded outward. Hua Ho saw an opportunity to be part of that development to make modern retail accessible to growing suburbs. The Berakas store became a bridge between rural and urban shoppers, offering more than just daily necessities: a chance for people to access a wider array of products.

GADONG 1

Five years later, in 1987, Hua Ho expanded deeper into Gadong with “Gadong 1.” This wasn’t just a new location it was larger, more ambitious. Hua Ho used this as a chance to refine in-store layout, customer flow, and the shopping experience: broader aisles, more displays, better lighting. Gadong 1 also introduced innovative ways of engaging shoppers through in-store promotions and improved services, setting a new benchmark that became the model for Hua Ho’s future outlets.

SENGKURONG

Sengkurong is a coastal, semi-rural region west of Bandar Seri Begawan. In 1988, Hua Ho opened here to better serve populations outside the core city, people who otherwise had to travel further for comprehensive shopping. Sengkurong became a demonstration of Hua Ho’s mission to be accessible: every person, regardless of where they lived, should have a quality shopping option. It also helped Hua Ho develop logistics: transporting goods to more remote or less central locations with care.

GADONG 2

The early 1990s saw Gadong’s continued growth as both residential and commercial centre. In 1992 Hua Ho introduced Gadong 2 a larger, more modern store with extended product lines, more imported items, possibly better amenities. Gadong 2 also served as an anchor for new residential developments: people moving into new housing could count on Hua Ho being close by, familiar, dependable.

YAYASAN

1996 marked another key expansion into the heart of the capital with the Yayasan outlet. The name “Yayasan” carries prestige and centrality: this store served professionals, government workers, diplomats, and urban customers who expected a high standard. Here Hua Ho elevated customer service, polish, and product variety. It likely became a landmark not just for shopping, but as a social space where people met, browsed, and enjoyed being in a well-curated environment.

KIULAP

When Hua Ho first opened its doors in Kiulap in 1997, the area was just beginning to blossom into one of Brunei’s most vibrant hubs. Surrounded by a growing mix of residential neighbourhoods, restaurants, and small businesses, the Kiulap outlet quickly became a one-stop destination. Families would shop for daily groceries, browse through fashion and homeware selections, and enjoy the convenience of finding everything under one roof. For many, the Kiulap store was not just a shopping place, but part of their weekend routine an anchor in their community life.

Today, Kiulap has transformed into a bustling commercial centre, known for its blend of local eateries, international brands, and lively streets. Through all this change, Hua Ho Kiulap has continued to grow with its customers. The store has modernised its layout, expanded its product offerings, and elevated its shopping experience to keep pace with the area’s energy. While new competitors have emerged over the years, Hua Ho’s presence in Kiulap remains strong standing as a trusted household name that has served generations. From its early beginnings to the thriving landscape it sits in today, Kiulap reflects Hua Ho’s ability to adapt while staying true to its values of quality, variety, and service.
