About Lau Ah Kok

Lau Ah Kok (1920 – 2018) was a pioneering businessman and philanthropist who transformed Brunei’s retail and agricultural sectors. As the founder of Hua Ho Department Store, he played a crucial role in shaping the nation’s business landscape. His journey from humble beginnings to becoming a leading entrepreneur is a testament to his vision, dedication, and perseverance.

Arriving in Brunei as a young man, Lau Ah Kok began his career as a clerk but soon pursued his entrepreneurial ambitions. In 1942, he purchased land in Jalan Muara, Manggis, where he started vegetable farming and poultry. His determination and business acumen led him to establish Hua Ho Department Store, which grew into one of Brunei’s most prominent retail chains. He also contributed significantly to modernizing Brunei’s agriculture sector, expanding farming ventures in Junjongan and Labi.

A Legacy That Lives On

Lau Ah Kok’s impact extended beyond business. In 1950, he married Lim Kui Eng, and together they raised a family of seven children. His second son, Lau How Teck, followed in his father’s footsteps, becoming a successful businessman and a member of Brunei’s Legislative Council.

For his contributions to business and the community, Lau Ah Kok received numerous honors, including the Asia-Pacific Entrepreneurship Lifetime Achievement Award (2008). Even after his passing in 2018, his legacy continues through the enduring success of Hua Ho Department Store and his pioneering efforts in Brunei’s agricultural sector. His story remains an inspiration for future generations, embodying the power of perseverance and vision.
